Let's say that I have a bit of a guacamole addiction. I've tasted hundreds of guacamole recipes, and my mama's is still my all-time favorite. It's easy to make and has the perfect balance of avocados, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, peppers, and fresh lime juice, leading to overindulgence and requests to make more! It's a great appetizer with corn tortilla chips or a healthier option, served on endive, an excellent topping on tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, burritos, taquitos, and more. And when you make it at home, you can taste-test it and customize the flavors for your guests and use the freshest ingredients.
My mama's guacamole has reached must-have recipe status and is always on the menu for any gathering! Family and friends have pleaded for the leftovers and kept track of whose turn it was to take home the guacamole. And now, to avoid any conflicts, I make extra and pre-package to-go containers for our guests. It's really that delicious! Let's say our family has an obsession with guacamole.
My mother taught me to make her guacamole, and I made this beloved family recipe with her for several decades. I'm so grateful for all the lovely memories we shared while chopping and taste testing. And now, whenever I make it, and I take that first bite with a corn tortilla chip, I imagine her next to me asking me if the avocados are creamy enough, does it have enough lime juice, and if it is spicy. And if I say yes, I can still see the smile on her face and then that faraway look of food bliss as she took her first bite.
In addition to the recipe below, I've also made a video showing how to select ripe avocados and make my mama's guacamole.
So if you're ready to make the best guacamole ever, please proceed, and I'll share all the tips that have helped me master my mama's recipe. I know you can make us proud! And just a friendly reminder, this recipe has a high probability of creating guacamole addicts :).
Mama Rose’s Guacamole Recipe
Tools
Ingredients
Five large avocados
One medium-ripe tomato
¼ yellow, medium onion
Two large limes
½ bunch of fresh cilantro
One jalapeño chile (seeded)
Three serrano chiles (seeded)
Salt to taste
Directions
Taste test as you go with a corn tortilla chip to perfect the flavors of your signature guacamole.
Step 1
Finely chop tomato, onion, cilantro, chiles, and place in a bowl. Tip - keep ingredients separate so you can add a little at a time to regulate the spiciness, etc.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, add peeled avocados, lime juice, and salt, and mash together until chunky/creamy. Tip- add the juice of the limes a little at a time to taste test and ensure that is right for you.
Step 3
Add chopped ingredients to the avocados and mix well with a large spoon.
Step 4
Serve immediately or refrigerate. Cover with plastic wrap if refrigerating and gently push on the guacamole, removing all excess air. Serve with tortilla chips or on tacos, tostadas, nachos, quesadillas, etc.
Happy Cooking!
